The main text for this unit is Animal Farm, by George Orwell, a story that, on the surface, appears to be about the relationship between the animals on the farm and their human owners. On a deeper level, however, it is a story of ideology, propaganda, politics, and human nature. After reading this book, students will write an essay and make a portfolio presentation describing not only one of the characters in the book, but also the historical background and real events behind that character.
